The Last Days of Jack Sparks by Jason Arnopp was recommended to me by my friend Emma, and I’m so glad I gave it a go as it’s one of the best books I’ve read in years! I can’t even compare it to anything I’ve read before, it’s so unique. If I had to categorise it, I'd say it's a paranormal horror novel.

Jack Sparks is a controversial journalist, writer & social media personality. His latest book (the book you’re reading right now) is called ‘Jack Sparks on the Supernatural’ where he sets out to debunk the world of the supernatural. It was the last thing he was working on before he died. There was also that video; 40-seconds of chilling footage that was posted from Jack’s YouTube account, that he repeatedly claimed was not of his making.
Jack’s brother Alistair made the decision to publish this book in its raw form so people can read his story.
Written in the first person, it is also interspersed with amusing notes from Jack to his editor, e.g. “We might need to remove this part so we don’t get sued!”
Review
This is one creepy book, but in a subtle way. There were times where I genuinely had no idea what was going to happen next, and I love a book that keeps me guessing. The ending in particular was extremely clever and ties the story together beautifully.
I also enjoyed Alistair’s commentary throughout the book, where he gives his opinion confirming or denying whether certain events actually happened. It makes you question whether Jack was exaggerating or telling the truth.
This isn't my usual genre, but it was something a bit different and I really enjoyed it. I'd recommend it if you enjoy books with a touch of the paranormal.
