A few weeks ago I headed up North with some of my family to go on an adventure through the Yorkshire Moors! On a sunny Saturday we caught the North Yorkshire Moors Railway to the seaside town of Whitby, stopping off at Goathland and Grosmont along the way.
I was most excited to see the spot where they filmed some of the Hogsmeade scenes for the Harry Potter films (*nerd alert*), and my Granddad had always wanted to visit the place where they filmed Heartbeat.
My sister goes to University in York, but there were too many of us to squeeze into her student house, so we booked a cottage in a little village around 45 minutes away.
We then caught the steam train from Pickering, which wasn't too far away from where we were staying. Return tickets to Whitby from Pickering were £26 per person (which also allowed us to hop on and off) but you can get them a little cheaper if you book online more than 10 days before you go.
Goathland (aka Aidensfield)
First stop along our route was Goathland - aka Aidensfield. I've never really watched Heartbeat, but my Granddad was pretty chuffed about having a pint in the Aidensfield Arms. I had a hot chocolate and a cheese scone as a quick snack which was also delicious.
We easily spent an hour wandering around the village, taking photos and checking out the sights. This was perfect for us as it fitted in well with when we had to catch the next train to Grosmont (for our connection to Whitby).
The weather was so unpredictable all day - one minute it was glorious sunshine, the next it was cold, wet and miserable! I even had to buy a coat from a charity shop in Whitby because I couldn't stop shivering!
Awful weather aside, it was a really lovely afternoon and the fish n chips in Whitby alone were well worth the trip. I didn't manage to take any photos in Whitby because I was worried about getting my camera wet, however I did manage to get a shot of myself in front of this awesome steam train on the way home.
Overall we had a fabulous day out, and I'd definitely recommend heading out into the countryside if you're looking for a fun day trip whilst in Yorkshire.

The weather has been awful everytime I've gone to Whitby, but its a beautiful place :)
I'll be honest, I'd never heard of Whitby before that weekend, but I'd definitely go again. I bet it's even prettier when the sun's out! x
